HOT COCOA BOMBS

A Hot Cocoa Bomb, also called a Hot Chocolate Bomb, is the thing this holiday season. It is a really fun and kids will absolutely love it!

And it can be the perfect DIY holiday gift this year. Pair it with a cute mug and Starbucks Hot Cocoa in a decorative box. Makes the best DIY Gift.

When I first saw it, I couldn’t wait to make them. Now, I can’t believe how popular they are becoming and they are so easy to make.

WHAT IS A HOT COCOA BOMB?

Hot Cocoa Bombs are a hollow chocolate shell that gets filled with hot coca mix and marshmallows.

If you want to get creative you can even add peppermint, caramel, Oreos, and so many other things!

You place the Hot Cocoa Bomb in a mug and pour hot milk over it.

The shell will start to melt away and all the marshmallows will release to the top. Give it a quick stir to mix the hot chocolate before you drink it.

HOW TO MAKE HOT CHOCOLATE BOMBS

It is a very easy process to make Hot Chocolate Bombs.

First you will need the following:

  • Round Silicone Molds
  • A Small Spatula or Spoon
  • Chocolate Chips
  • Hot Cocoa Mix
  • Mini Marshmallows
  • (Optional) caramel, peppermint candies, Oreos
  • Frosting to decorate

If you want to give them as a gift, you’ll also need: Cello treat bags.

STEP ONE – MELT THE CHOCOLATE

First you will need to melt chocolate.

I like to use Ghirardelli Chocolate Chips. They taste better than those chocolate melts you can get at your local grocery/craft store.

You can melt the chocolate with a double boiler or in the microwave. If you melt the chocolate using the microwave, make sure to mix it every 30 seconds so it heats up evenly.

STEP TWO – FILL THE MOLDS

Once the chocolate is melted, you will want to fill the Round Silicone Molds. Spread the chocolate up the sides of the molds and don’t leave any bare spots. Allow the molds to sit and rest for approx. 5 minutes.

After 5 minutes, you will want to re-coat the sides with chocolate to ensure each mold sides has enough chocolate. Then place in the freezer to set. Should take about 5-10 minutes.

STEP THREE – REMOVE THE MOLDS

If you use Round Silicone Molds, you can stretch the mold away from the sides to loosen up the chocolate. Then you can use your finger to push the bottom of each round mold and pop the chocolate out of the mold.

Don’t worry if some of the edges break off, we will melt the chocolate at the edges to form the ball.

STEP 4 – FILL THE CHOCOLATE SHELLS

Now for the fun part, filling them with all sorts of goodness!

But first, you will want to heat up a microwave safe plate until it is warm.

Then take one of the half-spheres and place it face down on the plate so you can melt the chocolate edges for a few seconds.

Next, fill the half with Hot Cocoa Mix, marshmallows, and anything else you want to include.

Now take another half-sphere and put it face down on the warm plate to melt the edges.

Bring the two halves together and gently press them together. You can use your finger to smooth the edge if there is excess chocolate around the seam.

Place the Hot Cocoa Bomb back in the freezer to set.

Once ready, you can drizzle frosting and decorate the Hot Chocolate Balls with your favorite sprinkles and candies.
